How To Run Your First 5K

If one of your goals is to run a 5k, then you are in luck, as this article will explain a few tips and tricks to getting you on the right track to completing that goal. If you are not familiar with how far a 5k is, it is roughly 3 miles. There are plenty of family fun races in addition to the 5k races your city offers, so get online and check for races in your area!

The First Step

The first step to getting on track to running a 5k is to sign up for a race at least 6 weeks early so you can get proper training in, with added accountability. Anytime you pay money for a race, you will be more inclined to stick with the training, and eventually complete the race! There are multitudes of websites that offer a list of races in your area, simply Google “5K races near me.”

The Second Step

Second, you will want to make sure that you are well equipped with the proper shoes! Go to your local running shop, and get fitted for the right running shoes that will be conducive to your foot strike and stability needs. The people working in these stores are friendly, and usually willing to show you a lot of different options to choose from that will fit your needs. The right shoes will make a world of difference for you and your comfort while training for the 5K. If you are not in proper shoes, it could result in shin splints or ankle injuries so be aware of the importance of properly outfitting yourself!

The Final Step

Once you have picked your race, recruit a friend or family member to run the race with you! There is nothing more exciting than running a race with a friend or family member who has done training with you. During the race you will have someone to talk with, and to keep you motivated if you become tired! You will receive a race T-shirt, and a bib number that also make for great pictures and memories later on down the road!

When its race day, remember that you are not racing the other people running. You are simply doing this race for yourself, and it is perfectly okay if you have to walk a little. Pace yourself, and do not go out too strong as this could result in a painful and uncomfortable finish. There are water stations, snack stations, and a crowd of people that will be cheering you on so embrace the moment!


Don’t be shy to set goals and try to accomplish them! Mark your calendar and set your sights on completing the race, it will leave you feeling great! Tell people about it, and it will give you motivation to follow through with your words! If you have children, get them excited about participating as well, and make it a family affair. You can do anything you set your mind to, so go out and achieve your goals!
